Category: R134a Refrigerant Gases

R134a refrigerant gas is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) that is widely used as a high-temperature refrigerant for domestic refrigeration and automobile air conditioners . It has the chemical formula CF3CH2F and a boiling point of −26.3 °C at atmospheric pressure. R134a refrigerant gas is a safe and reliable gas with a good level of chemical stability. It is also versatile and can be used as a propellant for pharmaceuticals, a blowing agent for plastic foam, and a solvent for cleaning. R134a refrigerants was a major breakthrough in the early 1990s as it replaced the ozone-depleting R-12 and helped protect the environment.

An Insight into R134a

R134a is a widely common refrigerant that is primarily used as a substitute for R12 Refrigerant because of its identical thermodynamic properties to R12. It was introduced in 1990 to lessen the harmful impact of refrigerants on the environment. Unlike many other refrigerants, R134a is considered a retrofit solution for existing systems that use R12 as their Refrigerant; however, some adaptation measures need to be taken. For instance, R134a refrigerant uses Polyester Oil (POE) to function, so an oil change is required. There are some retrofit kits available in the market that can be purchased for a smooth transition from R12 to R134a gas.

It is also identified by its chemical name 1,1,1,2-TetraFluoroethane. Apart from being used as a refrigerant itself, it also serves many purposes by being used as a blend in other refrigeration applications.

Advantages of R134a Refrigerant Gas:

There are plenty of benefits that you can avail by choosing R134a as your refrigerant.

Environment Compatibility: This HFC gas is preferred over many other CFC gases like R-12 gas because of its positive environmental impact. It has 0 ODP (Ozone Depleting Potential) and a very low GWP (Global Warming Potential) of around 1430. Its 0 ODP means that it doesn’t negatively affect the ozone layer because of no chlorine presence.

Energy Efficiency: R134a is energy efficient which means that it provides efficient cooling solutions while consuming less energy. This quality helps in reducing the operating cost of the overall system.

Thermal Properties: Its thermodynamic properties, such as its low boiling point, make it effective at cooling and heat transfer. Its thermal properties appeal to a wide range of applications.

Safety: This refrigerant gas is non-flammable and non-toxic under normal operating conditions. Its non-flammable and non-toxic nature makes it safe for both consumers and technicians. it has been given an A1 safety rating from ASHRAE.

Long-Lasting: It is a durable and stable refrigerant, with a long service life in the systems where it is employed.

Non-corrosive: R134a does not affect metals. Its non-corrosive properties make it safe for metals.

Non-Explosive: It is non-explosive when disclosed in normal-pressure air. Only pressurizing it can prove fatal otherwise it doesn’t easily spark fire.

Cost-effective: It is cost-friendly because of its wide availability in the market; whereas, other refrigerants such as R12 are expensive comparatively. It is also very easy to set up and operate just fine with fewer modifications.

Lightweight: It is extremely lightweight and makes it easy to transport and work with.

Industrial Familiarity: Many HVAC technicians prefer R134a for refrigeration because it present in the market since 1990 and every qualified technician is familiar with its usage and handling process.

Precautionary Measures

  • R134a gas and R12 gas must not be mixed.
  • Mineral Oil and Alkyl Benzene Lubricants must be kept separated from R134a.
  • In the case of Automobile Applications, the compressor only gets oil return when the Polyalkylene Glycol Lubricant (PAG) is used in the system.
